More about Genevieve:

Since she can remember, Wisconsin based singer-songwriter Genevieve Heyward has grown up with music in her life. Adept at both guitar and piano, she writes her songs based on raw emotion and relatable experiences that cuts through with melody and sultry tone. Straight out of high school, she dove head first into music: touring nationally and internationally, either by herself, with her band, or with other well renowned artists. She has released numerous records throughout her career and doesn’t plan on stopping. Her music has hints of indie folk, bedroom pop and indie piano pop, all tied in with her own spin and topped off with a unique and rich voice. Her songs and performing style incorporates humor and connection, making the audience feel heard and immersed. After releasing her first album before graduating high school, “It’s Not Like Anyone’s Listening”, she went on to tour through the United States by herself or with other artists. She then released her second Ep, “The River” in 2019 at Painted Recordings. While recording and writing, she toured across the United States in Tennessee, California, Texas, Vermont, and eventually headed overseas where she did her first headlining European tour through Norway accompanied by a band. After returning she released her latest album, “The Norway EP”, which she had the opportunity to record in Scandinavia. Now she is currently working on her next project and planning on getting back to the road.

30+ songwriters take inspiration from local artists in a one-of-a-kind pairing of image and song as The Holiday Music Motel hosts its annual celebration of the togetherness that only weather-bound isolation can bring... "

Examining the language used in other art forms helps us to expand the language which we use within our own. The Love On Holiday collaboration between musicians and visual artists reaches to do just that.

While many parallels can be drawn between the two art forms, there are obvious undeniable differences. Music has a broad palette to work from through words and sounds and even through medium and distribution; there is more of an immediacy to its access, translation and understanding, while visual art--outside from the obvious--sits still and quiet, telepathically transmitting purpose, history, emotion, intentions. The visual artist is speaking to us through what we are viewing but all too often we cannot understand. It is that quiet, nagging, often unsettling wonderment that changes our own thinking and perception, that alters our synapses and thought processes and remains with us long after we leave the space of a work that moved us.

It is emotion manifested in the visual.

Perhaps this is how the visual artists “sing.”

The artists generously loaning their work for this year’s songwriting collaborative are bravely allowing their works to be mined and explored for inspiration, story and meaning; to have it interpreted and translated through the immediacy of the art of songcraft performed before the public within days, if not hours, of being written.

Unavoidably influenced by the songwriters’ own history and experiences, the collaboration between these two worlds will, as in years past, yield music of a depth and power that only this unique cross-collaboration can inspire.

Dark Songs from The Holiday Music Motel

Third Avenue Playhouse, 239 N 3rd Ave, Sturgeon Bay

Dark Songs from The Holiday Music Motel!!! Stage fright!

In a life-or-death quest for the perfect Halloween theme, 36 songwriters face a darkly daunting deadline. Paired off in 3 frightening games of spin-the-bottle, they co-write their commingled hearts out before taking the stage to face the greatest terror of all: YOU!

Dark Songs 2019 marks the annual events 10th anniversary with its eleventh production, STAGE FRIGHT!!!

Since its first incarnation in 2009 as The Edgar Allan Polka (celebrating Edgar Allan Poes 200th birthday), the Dark Songs stage aesthetic has fluctuated between classic Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos while more recently, some specific themes have emerged. Last years theme was a psycho circus. The year before, it was a mock opera about Sturgeon Bays historic granary, which was endangered at the time. This years Stage Fright theme involves an exorcism.

Themes change, but dark comedy is the consistent element, along with regular nods to polka music theres always tuba and accordion and of course, Edgar Allan Poe (the original guiding light).
