Selections from Steel Bridge Songfest Vol. 1

ONLY A FEW LEFT!!

SAVING AN OLD BRIDGE, CREATING NEW ONES

Released June 14, 2007

One week in June, 2006, twenty-five songwriters from across the U.S. filled the old Holiday Music Motel in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin with a purpose in mind: To save an old bridge.

Songwriting teams formed in a game of spin the bottle. Songs were written fast and captured fresh in a makeshift studio in one of the rooms. New groups formed as more flooded the town, and Steel Bridge Songfest 2 culminated in an all-day waterside concert headlined by Jackson Browne.

The 15 selections on this disc bring the message, convey the fun, and immortalize the spirit of Steel Bridge Songfest. The writers and artists all volunteered their time, energy and creativity to this project.

All proceeds & royalties donated to the Steel Bridge Creative Foundation.

More Songs Inspired by Sturgeon Bay's Historic Bridge!

ONLY A FEW LEFT!!

SAVING AN OLD BRIDGE, CREATING NEW ONES

Released June 12, 2008

A campaign to save an old bridge becomes a large-scale musical event, inspiring artists and revitalizing a community in the process.

The Sturgeon Bay Bridge has long been an object of controversy in Door County, Wisconsin, where folks either love or hate it. Time after time, the 80-year-old monstrosity has had to prove its worth to avoid the wrecking ball.

Steel Bridge Songfest started celebrating its existence in 2005, and has rapidly become a new Door County tradition. Now more people seem to be loving that old bridge. The Construction Zone is a week of collaborative songwriting that coincides with the festival. Writing takes place in motel rooms, coffee shops, down by the waterside, all over town. Writers are asked to write songs using the bridge as inspiration.

"The Bridge-with-a-capital-B has long been a potent metaphor in popular song," says CZ founder pat mAcdonald. "The steel drawbridge is a great symbol of strength and of joining together, the melding of diverse cultures, divergent views, the old and the new, the words and the music, the tangible and the intangible..."

Steel Bridge Songfest, with its infusion of new songs written solely for the event, is truly a first-of-its-kind festival, merging forward-thinking with historic preservation. Young and old, tourists and locals, the rich and the struggling, the hip and the conservative, come together in a common cause. New bridges made of music and song save an old one made of steel. These songs bring the message, convey the fun, and immortalize the spirit of Steel Bridge Songfest.

The writers and artists have all volunteered their time, energy, and creativity to this project.

Even MORE songs that owe their life to that bridge in Sturgeon Bay!

ONLY A FEW LEFT!!

Released June 14, 2009

2008 looked like it might be a tough year for bridge songs. A motel fire moved the Songwriters out to Beach Harbor Resort (Thanks Beach Harbor!) where, though it looked like a toy in the distance, the bridge still managed to inspire. A week of rain brought out images of water and a feeling of wanting to "get across." Taking inspiration where they could find it, the writers rose once again to the challenge, producing a brilliant rainbow of songs as impressive for its cohesiveness as for its diversity. Selecting only fourteen for this disc wasn't easy!

Thanks to the writers and to the volunteers who donated hour upon hour to see this through. This collection would not have been possible without your love and support! Special thanks to Christie Weber for her unwavering vigilance and dedication. And thanks finally to the bridge herself, for bringing us all together! xo, p

...and yet even MORE songs inspired by Sturgeon Bay's famed Steel Bridge!

ONLY A FEW LEFT!!

Released June 14, 2011

What is it about Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin that inspires so many great songs? Some say it's something in the water, something that was planted here long ago, rising high above the surface, holding firm for those crossing over, opening up for those who float on by. What could be more inspirational or set a better example for the struggling artist in all of us than an old steel drawbridge?

MORE songs inspired by Sturgeon Bay's historic bridge!

ONLY A FEW LEFT!!

Released June 6, 2014

Sturgeon Bay's Michigan Street Bridge was reopened to traffic in 2011.

After decades of neglect and a long battle for preservation followed by a complete rehab of its historic structure, it is restored to its original glory. We like to think this ongoing collection of songs helped secure this happy ending. While the victory took many voices inside and outside our community, the music created at The Holiday Music Motel fueled the fight.

But the struggle against the onslaught of vacant, disposable culture goes on. And the steel bridge stands as a living reminder of the importance of resistance--what better symbol of connection, purpose, and permanence exists?

So we who write songs, who are inspired by impressive things both old and new, will continue to raise our voices, to create commotions to honor the bridge and commemorate the fight to save her.

All proceeds & royalties go to the Steel Bridge Creative Foundation, a benevolent organization dedicated to the preservation of our Bridge and the historic character of downtown Sturgeon Bay.

Thanks to all our bridge-hugging friends, fans, and families, and special thanks to the bridge herself for hanging in there all these years!

TEN YEARS OF MUSIC INSPIRED BY STURGEON BAY'S HISTORIC STEEL BRIDGE!

Released June 13, 2015

27 new bridge songs on 2 discs in a double pocket disc wallet.. 2014 was a productive year in the Construction Zone!

Chris Aaron (1970-2014) was all kinds of bridges. He was the kind that could carry you across tough waters. He was also that anchor that holds the strings, transferring their vibrations to the body, making it resonate. He was the love itself, the greatest bridge of all. Hugely involved in Steel Bridge Songfest from the very beginning, he was central to every event, writing, playing, engineering, whatever he could do to make it great. No one suspected that Steel Bridge 2014 would be his last.

This 2014 collection is dedicated in loving memory to our dear friend, Chris. We love you, brotherman!

Recorded June 8-15, 2014 by Steve Hamilton, Chris Aaron, Teve Mith, Dan O Stoffels and Barrett Tasky in Sturgeon Bay, WI at The Holiday Music Motel / Tambourine Collaboratory.
